DAP is one of the social activities of ASME International. The main objectives of initiating this program are the following:
1. Inspire young students to excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education
...2. To increase the participation and retention of women in ASME Student Sections
3. To promote ASME’s image and prestige with industry and minority- and women-owned businesses
THE DIVERSITY ACTION PROGRAM 2010
Each year, ASME International invites proposals from all of its student sections worldwide to implement the ‘Diversity Action Program (DAP)’ and on the basis of their proposals sections are selected for the program. This year ASME-UET student section has been given the honor amongst the student sections of Pakistan to execute this program.
OBJECTIVES
Each year, the number of female students applying to the engineering courses is quite low despite the percentage they constitute of the entire student body of Pakistan, which is approximately 50%. ASME UET Lahore Student Section has decided to target K12 in general with special focus on “all girls” schools, to inculcate in them, awareness and interest about engineering opportunities and the wide scope in Mechanical Engineering, through seminars, presentations and various competitions. These events will be organized in six schools, four of which will be local and the other two from Kashmir, the earthquake stricken area (2005) in the North of Pakistan. ASME aims to set standards for the benefit of humanity. Through our project we want to make the local children enthusiastic about getting education and especially about an engineering education. So these children can hope to have bright futures and contribute for the welfare and development of society.
ACTIVITY PLAN
The theme of the event at each institute will be “Engineering for all”. The event will comprise a seminar, a presentation, and a competition. Further details are given below:
1. Introduction to ASME & its achievements
This will be given by the members of ASME UET Lahore student section. A brief introduction to ASME and its achievements will be highlighted to enlighten students about the international societies and how helpful they can be.
2. CAREER COUNSELING SEMINAR
Female members of ASME UET will conduct these sessions. They will impart information regarding the scope and job opportunities in the engineering and specifically mechanical engineering sector for females of Pakistan. This will also serve as a career counseling session.
3. DESIGN AND BUILD COMPETITION
A very simple design and build competition will be organized to keep the event a learning experience for the students at the same time, make it fun and interactive. The winners would be awarded certificates and shields.
All the attending students as well as the senior management staff of the respective school will be given souvenirs. The time taken for the entire event would be 2-3 hours.
BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT
The seminars and presentations will aim at sparking interests for scientific studies (science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)) and engineering in the young minds i.e. to make the students realize the importance of sciences and engineering and how they help to develop the world around us. These presentations will also aim to introduce engineering and more specifically mechanical engineering to the young audience, females in particular.
In addition to this, the design contests will help to give a hand-on approach to designing and building to the participants while communicating the excitement of engineering. So they can see that how engineering adds value to their everyday lives.
