Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) (1:30pm to 3:00pm)
By Dr. Ali Hammad (KICS)

Registration Fee: PKR 150/-

Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) is a version of the Internet Protocol that is designed to succeed Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4). IPv4 is the first publicly used Internet Protocol and has been in operation since 1981. IPv6 is an Internet Layer protocol for packet-switched internetworking and provides end-to-end datagram transmission across multiple IP networks. As a datagram service it does not guarantee reliability, a function provided at the Transport Layer. The main driving force for the redesign of Internet Protocol was the foreseeable IPv4 address exhaustion.

Topics to be discussed are:-
-IPv4 addressing and ROADS problem
-IPv6 as strategic technology
-NAT/PAT
-IPv6 protocols and addressing
-Address auto-configuration and route summarization
-Tunneling as IPv6 transition
-ICMPv6
-IPv6 challenges and activities at the IETF (ISOC) including MIPv6, 6LoWPANs, IPv6 Maintenance.

About the Speaker:
Ali Hammad Akbar obtained his bachelor’s degree with distinction in telecommunications from NUST, Pakistan in 1997. In 1998, He did his MS from UNSW Australia, which concluded with his research findings in DWDM systems in optical communication systems. While in Australia, he also worked as a consultant to Eztel Corporation. In 2004, he joined Ajou University for pursuing the PhD studies. He worked on the architectural issues of wireless sensor networks that define the role and mechanisms for addressing the constraints and challenges purported in these networks. After the completion of his PhD, he is currently working as an assistant professor at UET, Lahore. His topics of interest include wireless networks such as MANETs and sensor networks.

Cloud Computing (3:30pm to 5:30pm)
By Mr. Abdul Qadeer

Registration Fee: PKR 150/-

'Cloud Computing' (CC) is more of a buzz word than a technical term. But it has used so extensively in popular media that we feel stuck with it. In this presentation we will try to separate sales man's perspective of cloud computing from a technical person's perspective. We will discuss CC in a broader computer science perspective with little digressions here and there along the talk. In the second half, we will learn about Amazon's AWS which is based on so called CC. It should serve as a good case study for the audience. Following is a high level division of the discussion.
-Cloud computing (CC) - Busting the buzz word!
-Characteristics of CC
-Understanding by Example - Amazon Web Services
-MapReduce framework [Tentative]

About the Speaker:
Abdul Qadeer is a Fulbright scholar and holds a masters degree in computer science from University of Southern California. He is broadly interest in 'Systems' with specific focus on distributed system. Periodically he contributes to large open source projects like Hadoop. He is currently working with High Performance computing & Networking Lab at Al-Khwarizmi Institute of Computer Science at UET, Lahore. He works on diverse projects relating to virtualization and cluster computing. Currently he is building emulation support for Octeon processor in an open source emulator called QEMU. He is also building Urdu language search engine in collaboration with Center for Language Engineering.

Rules

The following are the rules for the Student design contest 2011 local round.

The local rounds are now divided into two parts.
First round
First round shall be, most likely, on 29th December 2010.In this round all teams shall bring their fabricated designs and shall present them before the jury and the technical team.
Technical Team:
The technical teams should consist of 4 members who are not only the winners of the last year local round of SDC but ,in addition to that ,they also won SLS ”Student leadership seminar at ” (All Pak level) and represented Pakistan in SPDC held in INDIA through teleconferencing.

The technical team will judge your fabricated design in the light of the design statement and FAQ’s and after their judgment you will be allowed to run your car in the presence of jury who will adjudicate your performance and award you credit for the covered straight line distance consequently. We will make sure that your design must be kept secret from the other teams so other teams couldn’t copy your design in the next round if you are able to qualify for the next round.(Don’t show or discuss your design with the other teams its for your on betterment)Bring your device and vehicle in opaque bags on the contest day so no one would see the mechanisms used to drive model car. Other teams will only be allowed to see your design from a farther distance to just have an idea that if your car has travelled or not in order to ensure transparency of the competition.

Important note: (Final decisive round)
On the basis of jury’s decision top three teams of first round will move to the next final decisive round.
This decisive round will be held one week before the SLS “Student leadership seminar” most probably in February 2011 and the winner of this round will be allowed to participate in SLS to represent UET Lahore to win this honor back to our university since we are SDC holder for the prior year 2010.

Certificates:
Participation and distinction certificates shall be awarded to participants of the first round. At the end I wish you all the very best. Work hard and prove yourself among the rest.
